Can you run or trek over 100km in 2 days along England’s most famous Pilgrim’s Route?

THE CANTERBURY TRAILS: 8TH-9TH AUGUST 2020

The Canterbury Tales were a series of stories authored by the famous English author Geoffrey Chaucer and they depict a number of colourful characters making a Pilgrimage to Canterbury along what was a very popular Pilgrim’s route.

That route in large part followed the old Roman road of Watling Street and connected Southwark with Canterbury over some 67 miles (100 + KM) of distance.

Our objective is to re-trace the steps of CHAUCER’S PILGRMS over 2 days, weaving our way through LEAFY South London to Rochester Castle. After overnighting in these Medway Towns we then head onwards through tranquil lowland orchards and beside the North Downs, before terminating at THE MAGNIFICENT Canterbury Cathedral.

An oddity of the Pilgrimage of Yore was that the Pilgrims would complete the final 3 miles barefoot, as a penance. We intend to do likewise for the final mile…! This is an optional challenge for those who feel comfortable taking on this quirky finish!

You can expect this event to deliver all the qualities of RAT RACE’S established Ultra Runs: ICONIC start and finish venues, SUPERBLY DETAILED waymarking, INCREDIBLY YUMMY Pit Stops and devoted marshalling.

WHY IS THIS EVENT SO DIFFERENT TO THE REST?

INTRODUCING: THE RAT RACE WAY

There are plenty of Ultras out there – many follow England’s fine network of long-distance paths – Thames path, South Downs Way, North Down Way, the ridgeway, etc. running and hiking these routes is not new.

It’s been going on for centuries. Literally. But this route is different. It simply does not exist anymore. The passage of time has buried the ancient roman road of Watling Street under modern London and Kent, but if you scratch that surface, some wonderful and historic touch-points emerge.

What a fantastic way to touch some of southern England’s most famous landmarks on a lost route that virtually every school kid in Britain has read about. We therefore present to you a modern pilgrimage Rat Race style. Enjoy our tour of Chaucer’s Olde England and see some of what the Wife of Bath, the Miller and their gang would have seen; as well as soaking up the modern landscape that has sprouted up in the intervening centuries.

Set forth from the grounds of the stunning Southwark Cathedral, nestled amongst the modern cityscape of London Bridge (close to the site of the former Tabard Inn, where the pilgrims would meet).

Pass by Tower Bridge and enjoy your first 10km on the traffic-free Thames path, winding its way past landmarks old and new as it makes its way to Greenwich

Take in maritime Greenwich, the Cutty Sark and glorious Greenwich Park

Discover some very unexpected historic sites along the shore in Dartford, Gravesend and Rotherhithe

Pass through scrapyards and other surreal urban landscapes

Take in stunning Rochester Castle and the Medway Towns

Pass Chatham Royal Historic Dockyard

Enjoy the peace and quiet of miles and miles of paths and quiet roads through Kentish orchards

Run some wonderful trails within lovely Church and Blean Woods prior to your arrival into Canterbury

Pass under Canterbury’s famous medieval city walls

Take your shoes off and run through Canterbury city centre like a real pilgrim!

FINISH at England’s most historic religious building, the centre of the Church of England which is still today a site of modern pilgrimage, as well as the terminus for millions of pilgrims who have gone before.
